Introducing Newland's Duo Near & Far technology, which combines two 2D scan engines in one device, working side by side to select and decode barcodes at both near and far distances. This technology has numerous applications across various industries, including retail, manufacturing, logistics, warehousing, and supply chain.

The limits of regular barcode scanning

From being able to read reflective barcodes to really high-density ones, the technology has come far since its invention. However, there are still a few limitations that can slow down processes. One of the limitations of standard distance barcode scanners is their inability to scan barcodes that are far away. Even though near-distance scanning still makes up the majority of scanning requirements, often, there is a need to scan barcodes without getting close.

With Duo, companies can consolidate their scanning technology into a single device, resulting in significant cost savings and increased efficiency. With the ability to switch seamlessly between codes at different distances, the workforce can combine near and far scanning workflow rather than delegating specific tasks or equipping staff with two different scanning devices.

How Duo technology from Newland works

Duo technology from Newland uses a sensor to judge the distance needed to select the snappy near-distance engine or the longer-focus far-distance engine. Strong LED lights adapt to make sure the barcodes are visible, and a bright laser aimer ensures that the user can center the right codes into the optimal field of view, particularly for longer distances.

Accomplishing the limits of further distance reading depends on the choice of barcodes used. The barcodes' size is a key factor, especially with longer-distance scanning. Barcodes are printed to a size standard known as “mil,” where one “mil” is 1/1000th of an inch. In most far-distance scanning requirements, seeing the barcode you want to scan clearly is a practical necessity. For example, a small retail code printed to 13mil resolution isn’t clear enough to scan.  Newland measures its minimum long-distance scanning of 9.8 meters in the Duo technology on a standard 100mil Code 128 barcode, which is the most common code and size used for warehouse, supply chain, and logistics applications.  A 200mil printed code can be read from even further.

Optimize scanning processes, save time and save costs

Duo technology from Newland can be used across all industries and applications that would benefit from having both near and far scanning in a single device. It saves time, improves efficiency, and saves costs. For example, retail shelf replenishment and order fulfillment may require scanning products in high or hard-to-reach places. By using this technology, you’ll save costs on the amount of devices you need to purchase.

In manufacturing, products, parts, or components can be scanned from a distance without having to get too close to machinery. In warehouses or supply chain environments, products on pallets, racking, or containers can be scanned without risking climbing or leaving the forklift seat. By providing two scan engines in one device, the need to switch, move or use extra tools is eliminated. Improve workflow, efficiency, and safety by relying on the right tools and hardware – that’s the power of Duo technology from Newland.

Duo – an excellent investment

In conclusion, the Duo technology from Newland simplifies near and far-distance scanning by providing a single device that can handle both types of scanning. Its cost-saving and efficiency-improving benefits make it an excellent investment for businesses looking to optimize their barcode scanning processes. Duo by Newland – near & far distance scanning made simple.
